Attractions in & Getting Around Siem Reap
Siem Reap is the gateway town to the Angkor Archaeological Park, it lies on the banks of the mighty Tonle Sap Lake and was a small provincial capital before the tourists started arriving to visit the Angkor temples. Besides the temples, there are a few things to do with your time in Siem Reap. If you are looking for information about the temples, go to our Temple Guide.
Butterfly Garden (Restaurant/Bar) An enclosed butterfly garden with hundreds of native Cambodian butterflies and exotic plants & flowers. Local children go out with butterfly nets and catch the butterflies to release into the garden, very tranquil and pleasant. Although they did not have many items on their food menu, it is still worth a visit for a drink and to look around.
Tonle Sap Lake Make an excursion to the Tonle Sap Lake, which in the rainly season swells to more than five times its size and is a thriving fishing area for locals. See villages on stilts around the lake, boat tours of the nearest village Chong Khneas are available. If arriving to Siem Reap by boat ferry from Phnom Penh, you will travel over the lake and arrive at Chong Khneas. In the dry season the lake shrinks and the fish are caught in the shrinking waters, travel by boat is also more difficult as the dry season progresses.
Bird Sanctuary Prek Toal At the Northwestern tip of Lake Tonle Sap is home to many species of wild birds, get a boat there from Chong Khneas, best time is the start of the dry season.
Cambodia Land Mine Museum Located in Siem Reap, this museum of landmines and unexploded ordinance that has been collected from demining work carried out by the Cambodia Land Mine Museum Relief Fund (CLMMRF) a NGO working to clear mines and help victims of mines in Cambodia. Visit the museum to see examples of mines and how they are helping.
You can get around in Siem Reap by asking any moto, tuktuk or taxi driver on the street where you'd like to go, or if you have hired a driver for a day to visit the temples, they can take you back to Siem Reap for lunch, and sometimes out in the evening too.

Where to Eat & Drink in Siem Reap
The temples at Angkor are the main attraction for travellers to Cambodia, so many will find themselves staying near or in Siem Reap town. Many restaurants, pubs, bars, guesthouses & hotels catering to tourists and international travellers can be found all around Siem Reap, but many are concentrated in the Old Market area and 'Pub Street'. FCC Angkor (Foreign Correspondents Club)
Based on the popularity of the FCC in Phnom Penh, the FCC Angkor has attractive modern architecture and nice bar out the front and restaurant inside the building, which is very open and airy especially on the first floor. Great food just like the one in Phnom Penh; European/International dishes. Highly recommended.
The Red Piano On the corner in Pub Street, good drinks & food. Popular & spacious, well worth a visit. Website: www.redpianocambodia.com
Happy Herb's Pizza And similar like 'Happy Angkor Pizza', good pizza. Delivery & takeaway if you need it.
Shopping in Siem Reap
The Old Market, located in the centre of town in the old colonial French quarter. Many interesting souvenirs and some not so interesting, lots of t-shirts & tourist stuff, but the market is the best option for shopping in Siem Reap. There are also a variety of small shops selling clothes, jewelry, handicrafts and other things.
