Cambodia has a small stretch of coastline to the south-west of the country where the town of Sihanoukville is located, the coast opens out to the Gulf of Thailand. The Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers are major features of Cambodia's geography.

The capital city of Cambodia is Phnom Penh, and the major town of Siem Reap is located near the Angkor Temple area. The population of Cambodia is approximately 13.6 million people, native Cambodian people call themselves 'Khmers', descended from the ancient Angkor Empire spanning from the 9th to 13th centuries CE.

The ancient temple of Angkor Wat is the main tourist attraction in Cambodia, the temple dates to the 12th century, and is surrounded by numerous more temples, most notably the Bayon, Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm and Banteay Srey among many others.

Attractions in Phnom Penh include:
The Royal Palace built in the late 1800's after the French took control of Cambodia.

Travelling in Cambodia

Cambodia is still a pretty unusual destination for travellers and tourists to Southeast Asia, there is much beauty to see in Cambodia, and the Khmer people are some of the happiest and friendliest in the world despite the years of war and internal conflict that scarred the country in the 1970's & 80's.

The Temples of Angkor, the Beaches of Sihanoukville, the City of Phnom Penh, the great Lake Tonle Sap are some of the highlights of any trip to Cambodia. While Siem Reap & the Angkor Temples are the main destination, an ever increasing number of people are visiting the capital Phnom Penh, a bustling vibrant city full of charm and much safer than it once was. You can easily fly between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, and to other nearby cities like Bangkok in Thailand.

Some more adventurous travellers are now visiting Cambodia's premier beach town of Sihanoukville, on the Southwest coast. Sihanoukville is only accessible by road (car, bus/minibus), you cannot fly to the coast, which leaves it very untouristed and most of the people that go there are the well-off people living in Phnom Penh who visit for a weekend. During the week in Sihanoukville it is very quiet and peaceful and often the beaches are deserted, there is no problem finding a place to stay in Sihanoukville and theres guesthouses & hotels to suit any budget.
